🥭 MANGO AND DIABETES A Complete Guide by Dr Muddu Surendra Nehru MD

QUICK FACTS per 1 katori (100g): Calories: 60 Carbohydrates: 15g Natural sugar: 13.7g Fiber: 1.6g Protein: 0.8g Fat: 0.4g GI: 51 (Medium) | GL: 8 (Low-Medium)

DIABETES VERDICT: ⚠️ EAT WITH CAUTION

IS IT SAFE FOR DIABETICS? Yes — but mango is higher in sugar than most fruits. GI of 51 is medium range. GL of 8 is acceptable in small portions. The fiber content helps slow sugar release.

HOW MUCH CAN YOU EAT? Half katori (50g) per day maximum. Never more than 1 small slice. Avoid during mango season excess.

BEST TIME: 11am mid-morning only. Never after 6pm. Never on empty stomach. PAIR WITH: 1 boiled egg or handful of peanuts.

AVOID MANGO IF:

  • Fasting sugar above 150 mg/dL
  • HbA1c above 8%
  • HOMA-IR above 3.5
  • On insulin therapy
  • During active diabetes flare

DR MUDDU TIP: In 32 years I tell patients — mango season is the biggest cause of sugar spikes in South Indian diabetics. One slice yes. One plate no. Check sugar 2 hours after.
